On 14 February, Vitebsk celebrates the 100th anniversary of the avant-garde creative group UNOVIS (The Champions of the New Art), created and led by Kazimir Malevich in 1919.
The night before, artists, designers, musicians, artists, DJs, firecrackers and other creative people gathered at Vitebsk hall to take part and watch the #SupremStorm_night performance.
It lasted five hours and featured the “battle” of artists, a Suprematist non-ballet and even Malevich’s sarcophagus. The organizers of the #SupremStorm_night tried to make the event interesting not only for arts people but also for ordinary citizens.
Ivona Malevich, Kazimir Malevich granddaughter, came from Germany to visit the milestone event. “You probably don’t understand what kind of folk treasure you have here in Vitebsk. This national treasure is UNOVIS,” she said.
Each spectator could drop by improvised art workshops, where artists worked on paintings inspired by Malevich’s opera Victory over the Sun. The suprematist night ended with fireworks and burning of a four-meter high art installation.
