Ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was included in the BBC’s top 100 most inspiring and influential women of the year.
“This year 100 Women is highlighting those who are leading change and making a difference during these turbulent times,” reads the article on bbc.com.
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who is featured in the Leadership category, along with Sanna Marin, who leads Finland’s all-female coalition government, Nemonte Nenquimo, who is defending her ancestral territory, culture and way of life in the Amazon rainforest, Vanessa Nakate, is a climate activist from Uganda and many others.
Tikhanovskaya’s profile describes her as a former presidential candidate in Belarus, where she led a national democratic movement.
“In August 2020, President Alexander Lukashenko claimed a landslide victory in the leadership election, sparking protests across the country amid widespread accusations of vote-rigging. Shortly after the election, fearing for the safety of her children, Svetlana fled Belarus for Lithuania. She continues to lead the democratic movement in exile.”
