The 21-year-old Japanese wrestler Risako Kawai beat the Belarusian 6-0 to gave Japan a fourth wrestling gold at Rio 2016. The bronze went to Poland’s Monika Michalik and Kazakhstan’s Yekaterina Larionova.
Mamashuk, who has made her Olympic debut, started her Rio campaign with winning over Kazakhstan’s Yekaterina Larionova 8-2. She then defeated Sweden’s Katarina Henna Johansson 7-2 and American Yelena Pirozhkova 3-2.
“I wanted a gold medal, but today I got the silver and that’s OK with me,” the athlete said. “This is my first Olympic Games and I’m very happy about it and the medal.”
Maria Mamashuk is the winner of 2016 European Wrestling Championships and bronze medalist at the First European Games in 2015.
Another Belarusian wrestler Vasilisa Marzaliuk lost to Chinese Fengliu Zhang in the bronze medal match.
