Vice-President of the European Parliament Nicola Beer spoke in favour of imposing sanctions against Belarusian judges, writes Radio Liberty.
“Personal sanctions against law enforcement officers are not enough. We must extend them to the judiciary and law enforcement agencies, Lukashenko’s supporters,” stressed Beer in her speech at the online conference “Solidarity with Belarus” on Saturday, 6 February. She added that European countries “must seek a balance between pressure and cooperation with the Belarusian authorities.”
Former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, in turn, said that “it is necessary to exert effective pressure on the regime in order to introduce effective sanctions against its “wallets”, security forces, propagandists, those who participated in rigging elections, and those who are now illegally judging Belarusians”.
