Anarchists held a rally near the Marriott hotel, where Minsk Dialogue Forum “European Security: Stepping Back from the Brink” takes place in Minsk on 7-8 October.
A group of five anarchists disguised as Jokers unfurled a black banner saying: “We are so happy to live in dictatorship” and lit smoke bombs.
Makeup was inspired by a recent Joker movie as the protesters wanted to draw parallels and stress social inequality, “which gives rise to violent forms of protest”.
“This is toxic, evil and a cowardly society that decided not to protect itself and its people. It gives rise to such terrible forms of protest. We are a trick mirror of what is happening in our society.
And we came here to show that we will not allow selling our country, to trade our rights. There are not many people who are ready to fight, but we are ready,” one of the protesters said.
The rally was held next to the authorized picket to collect signatures for nominating representatives of the civil campaign “European Belarus” as deputies.
The forum has gathered high-profile representatives and leading experts from the EU, U.S., Russia, China, East European and South Caucasian nations.
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is expected to take part in the event on 8 October. Anarchists were warned about administrative responsibility for unauthorized rallies.
None of them was detained.
