Orthodox Belarusians Brave Icy Waters To Celebrate Epiphany 2019

Orthodox Christians in Belarus had been taking the traditional plunge into freezing waters as they celebrated Epiphany last weekend.

Despite below zero winter temperatures the devout and the daring immersed themselves in frigid water through holes cut through the ice of lakes and rivers.

The ritual of purification is believed to have health-giving and washing-away-sins properties. Epiphany celebrates the revelation of Jesus Christ as the incarnation of God through his baptism in the River Jordan.
