Mortality in Belarus exceeds the birth rate. Last year, 94,000 people were born in the country, while 120,000 people died, Belstat’s reference book reports.
What is the most common cause of death in Belarus?
More than half of the Belarussians who died last year had circulatory system diseases such as coronary heart disease and arterial hypertension.
According to the National Statistics Committee, only 1,500 deaths were caused by acute myocardial infarction.
Recall, recently the WHO representative, Batyr Berdyklychev, said that 45% of Belarusians have hypertension, and more than half of them don’t take medicine.
The cause of death of almost 15% of those who died in 2018 was cancer. Diseases of the nervous system and sensory organs are the third most frequent cause of death.
Men die from cancer more often than women, while diseases of the circulatory system are a major cause of death for women.
Belarusians die from oncological diseases more often than from murder, suicide, and traffic accidents.
Most deaths from cancer are recorded in Minsk (3,503) and Gomel region (3,092). However, the leadership of the capital is associated primarily with the number of people.
The death rate from cancer in Minsk is the lowest in the country – 176.2 cases per 100,000 people in 2018.
Meanwhile, Vitebsk, Gomel and Mogilev regions lead in the number of deaths from cancer – 223,8, 218,9 and 215,6 per 100,000 population, respectively.
Minsk also has the lowest mortality rate for circulatory system diseases – 553.5 cases. For comparison, in the Grodno region it’s 804, and in Mogilev – 792.
There were six times more suicides than murders, 1806 and 305, respectively. There are a lot of cases of random alcohol poisoning recorded – 1,476 died in 2018. 759 people died in car accidents.
