Belarus Opens Consulate In Barcelona, ‘A Belarusian House In Catalonia’

Belarus inaugurated its Honorary Consulate in Barcelona on Wednesday, ONT channel reports.

The country’s second consulate in Spain will be led by the honorary consul lawyer Cristian Balcells.

The Honorary Consulate in Barcelona “will become a Belarusian house in Catalonia “, said Pavel Latushka, the Ambassador of Belarus to France and Spain, during the opening.

The consulate’s office is located in the centre of Catalonia’s capital in Rambla de Catalunya, 124, 1-2; and is open from 9 to 19.

“We are here to answer any questions Belarusian nationals will have that lie within our competency,” Cristian Balcells told journalists. The head of the consulate will also work to develop cultural and business ties between Belarus and Spain.

The Belarusian embassy in Spain opened at the end of 2016; the consulate in Alicante has operated since 2016.

According to the statistics of the Spanish side, about 1.8 thousand Belarusians reside in Catalonia. In 2017 Belavia’s passenger turnover between Minsk and Barcelona exceeded 40,000 passengers.

Belarus has been actively expanding diplomatic ties in Europe over the past years. In addition to the inauguration of the embassy in Spain, the Embassy of Belarus in Sweden re-opened in November 2017. Besides, the country added an honorary colsulate in the French Bordeaux last autumn.
