Meet Alan Dershowitz, an American lawyer and academic, who fought for rights of the Israeli athletes’, represented Mike Tyson and O. J. Simpson in court. Now he works for Billy McKeague who sues his ex-girlfriend Victoria Azarenka over the custody of their son Leo.
Just when it seemed that Azarenka is going to win a custody battle over their child a feud took another twist. The Supreme Court of Los Angeles ruled that the decision of the Belarusian court that awarded Victoria Azarenka the right for primary custody of her son Leo is entitled to no deference.

Recall that a court in Belarus found that the legal residence of the child was Azarenka’s apartment in Minsk. Shortly afterward McKeague appealed the ruling and the appeal was granted. The trial is currently ongoing. The final decision is to be made by the Supreme Сourt of Los Angeles.
Tennis.life reports that McKeague has Alan Dershowitz, the famous expert at procedural, case law and constitutional law, on his legal team. And his signature is clearly visible in the way the Azarenka vs. McKeague case U-turned.
O.J. Simpson, Claus von Bülow and others
One of his most glorious victories was the court’s acquittal of the O.J. Simpson case. The famous American football player was accused of killing his wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Lyle Goldman.
The evidence gathered by the prosecutor indicated that O. J. Simpson was the murderer. However, Dershowitz managed to find drawbacks in the evidence. Eventually, O.J. Simpson was acquitted.
In 1996, Dershowitz wrote a Reasonable Doubts: The Criminal Justice System and the O.J. Simpson Case book based on the court events.
In another high-profile case, the failure of evidence also played a crucial role. Dershowitz protected British aristocrat Claus von Bülow convicted for the attempted murder of his wife for 30 years in prison. Dershowitz proved that the evidence was illegally obtained and in the end, Claus von Bülow was released and found not guilty.
Considering the above-mentioned cases, the procedural negligence in Azarenka’s case pointed out by Dershowitz himself or by someone from his team, looks like a petty job for an experienced lawyer. Besides, Dershowitz is known for creating hype in the mass media and manipulating judges via public opinion in favor of the client.
Dershowitz and politics
Alan Dershowitz became the youngest professor at Harvard University at the age of 28. In his TV show, Larry King called him a ‘Hollywood professor’, but then corrected himself and joked that Alan was played in movies.
“Everyone who knows Professor Dershowitz, speaks of him with grim respect. Lawyers never speak well of him,” — this is how Alan Dershowitz was characterized before the public debate in Boston more than 30 years ago.
Over the years, Alan Dershowitz didn’t lose his credibility. Three American presidents – Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump – invited him to dinner. Yet he was strongly criticized for his meeting with Trump and supporting the decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transfer the American Embassy of Dershowitz to the city.
Indeed, he shared his expert opinion on the situation in the Middle East with the current U.S. president. He also devoted a number of books to the situation in Israel.
During the last presidential elections in the U.S., Dershowitz supported Hillary Clinton and allocated $10,000 to support her campaign. Since then, Alan hasn’t become a Trump’s fan. He’s in opposition to Washington’s immigration policy, as well as the tax and health care reforms.
On the other hand, Dershowitz took the Trump’s side when the latter was accused of allegedly using information illegally obtained from the computers of the National Committee of the Democratic Party and violating the law of financing campaigns, and alleged conspiracy with Russia.
In August 2017, Dershowitz published his book ‘Trumped Up’, where he makes arguments against Donald Trump’s impeachment. He states that there’s still no evidence of the American President’s guilt that would make him end up Richard Nixon.
Former Ukrainian ex-president and other facts
Dershowitz worked as a consultant of former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma, accused in the murder of an investigative journalist Georgy Gongadze in 2011. Eventually, the court in Kiev found the accusations against Kuchma groundless.
The outcome was achieved largely due to the Dershowitz’s strategy — he insisted that the discrediting audio recordings cannot be considered original. Later it turned out that they had been obtained illegally, therefore cannot be considered the evidence of Kuchma’s guilt.
Although Alan Dershowitz is an agnostic, it doesn’t prevent him from collecting Orthodox icons. He started collecting them after his visits to the USSR in the 1970-80s when he successfully defended Soviet dissidents in court. The lawyer also believes that he would have lost the case against Adolf Hitler but would represent him if this happened today and not in the 1940s.
In his opinion, no matter what happens, one must believe in the institution of the judiciary. Alan Dershowitz plays basketball, he roots for Boston Celtics club. Due to his legal activity in the Arab world countries, the Israeli athletes were allowed to compete and when they win the Israeli anthem is played and the Israeli national flag is raised.
Dershowitz doesn’t always win. In 1992, he lost Mike Tyson’s case, who was accused of raping Miss Black America contestant Desiree Washington. As a result, Tyson spent three years in prison out of six years required by sentence.
In his book America on Trial: Inside the Legal Battles That Transformed Our Nation, Dershowitz wrote that the relatives of prosecution provided the court with deliberately false testimony. This fact, as well as the pressure on the jury during the trial was reported to the media.
