Military uniform instead of dresses, ankle boots instead of heels and no make-up – in November 15-year-old Yulia Vaschenko, a student of a school in Bobruisk, a city in the east of Belarus, enrolled in a school of cadets to later join the Army.
The life of the only girl in a military class for boys – in pictures.
Yulia is the only girl in the class of military-patriotic education. More than 80% of its graduates choose an army career
The girl dreams of becoming a military psychologist. To bring that dream closer to reality, she decided to transfer from a usual class to the military-patriotic class of her school. The students of the class have in-depth study of physics and mathematics in their curriculum, and focus on pre-conscription training and physical exercises
“The boys treat Yulia nicely and try to take care of her”, the headmaster of the school Natalia Winokur says. “But she strives to be just as good, if not better, then they are.”
The girl-cadet admits that she was anxious on the first day in the class. “I thought “Me alone, among the boys? What if we will not find common interests?”, the girl says. Now she got used to her new classmates and does not doubt her own abilities
Yulia does all exercise on par with boys. 3 km runs in heavy army boots and and push-ups are a common thing for her
The hardest task for the girl is disassembling a Kalashnikov rifle. But she studies the characteristics of weapons with interest, and likes shooting from pneumatics during shooting classes
The class of military-patriotic education has existed in school No27 since 1998. Its graduates continued their education in the leading military schools in Belarus and Russia. Before Yulia, the school has had several girls cadets
The headmaster says girls who decide to become cadets should be very determined to stand up to the military uniform and not just wear it “for beauty”
“Girls in the army is a normal thing”, the school’s head believes
