The Rio 2016 Olympic Games closed with a spectacular show on Sunday night. Though this greatest sports event is over, the memories and the legacy of these 16 magical days will live on.
We decided to recall the moments when Belarusians rejoiced the victories of their athletes — not numerous, but always amazing!
GOLD in men’s trampoline — Uladzislau Hancharou
The long-awaited gold medal was won by 20-year-old Uladzislau Hancharou. The Belarusian was so stunning that he actually surpassed TWO Chinese atheletes in the final!
This is the first gold Belarus has got at Rio Olympics and the first gold the country has ever won in this discipline since it was included into the list of Olympic disciplines in 2000.
SILVER in weighlifting — Darya Naumova
The Belarusian weightlifter Darya Naumova opened the medal scor for Belarus with a silver.
She lifted a combined weight of 261 kg.
SILVER in weighlifting — Vadzim Straltsou
Vadzim Straltsou, the current world champion weightlifter, won a silver medal in the category of up to 94kg.
He lifted 175kg in the snatch and 220kg in clean and jerk. In total, the Belarusian athlete lifted 395kg.
“I knew that the whole country is waiting for an Olympic medal, so I put in every effort to take it. Thanks to everyone who cheers for our team and is happy for us!”, he said in an interview after the victory.
SILVER in wrestling — Maryia Mamashuk
23-year-old Maryia Mamashuk won silver in Olympic freestyle 63 kilogram wrestling. She brought Belarus 6th medal of the Olympiad.
Maryia, who made her Olympic debut in Rio, is the winner of 2016 European Wrestling Championships and bronze medalist at the First European Games in 2015.
SILVER in hammer throw — Ivan Tsikhan
Ivan Tsikhan won silver in hammer throw with the result 77.79m.
Ivan Tsikhan missed the 2012 Olympics after a sample he had given during the 2004 Athens games was retested and found to contain a banned substance. He began a two-year ban in late 2012, returning to competition in 2015.
BRONZE in swimming — Aliaksandra Herasimenia
Aliaksandra Herasimenia won a bronze in women’s 50m freestyle.
The 30 year-old athlete qualified for the final from the last, 8th, semifinal place but sailed for bronze in the final clocking 24.11 seconds, only 0.04 seconds slower than winner from Denmark Pernille Blume.
BRONZE in wrestling — Javid Hamzatau
Javid Hamzatau was awarded a bronze in Men’s Greco-Roman wrestling in the category of up to 85kg.
BRONZE in canoe sprint — Women’s Kayak Team
Belarusian women’s kayak four claimed bronze in 500m distance.
The quartet consisting of Nadezhda Liapeshka, Maryna Litvinchuk, Volha Khudzenka and Margarita Makhneva showed the final result of 1:33.908 following Germany and Hungary.
BRONZE in wrestling — Ibrahim Saidov
Heavyweight wrestler Ibrahim Saidov bagged bronze in men’s freestyle wrestling by leveling with Levan Berianidze of Armenia 2-2 and won on criteria.
He brough Belarus 9th and last medal of the Olympics.
