New Chargé d’Affaires of the USA in Belarus Robert J. Riley arrived in Minsk on August 22.
Before this appointment Mr. Riley worked as a political advisor and U.S. Deputy Ambassador to Hungary.
The former head of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Minsk Mr. Scott Rauland left Belarus on July 8. In an interview with BelaPAN news agency he noted a significant improvement of the Belarusian-American relations over the past two years.
The talks about the return of U.S. ambassador to Belarus would be resumed after the presidential elections in the USA, Mr. Rauland added.
“Only now, for the first time since 2008, we are beginning to talk about a possible exchange of ambassadors — a return of the Belarusian diplomat to Washington, and the US diplomat to Minsk. This issue has been put on hold until the parliamentary elections in Belarus (in September) and the US presidential election (in November).”
“If the exchange takes place, the diplomats, who will come here, will establish a different level of diplomatic representation”, Scott Rauland said.
At present nine U.S. diplomats are accredited for work in Minsk.
