New head of Israel’s Embassy Alon Shoham arrived in Minsk, the ambassador’s PR service has informed the media on Monday, 6 February.
Prior to his appointment as ambassador, Shoham worked as the head of the consular department at the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
He also served as the Charge d’affaires of Israel to Belarus for a month in spring 2016.
Alon Shoham is a career diplomat. He was born in Latvia and speaks Russian.
The former Israeli Ambassador to Belarus Yosef Shagal completed the diplomatic mission in Belarus in summer of 2015. Later it was reported that the Israeli government wants to close the embassy in Minsk for economic reasons.
In response, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry announced the intention to close its embassy in Tel Aviv, as envisaged by “diplomatic practice.”
Finally, in the spring of 2016 the Israeli Foreign Ministry said it would keep the diplomatic mission in Belarus in the same format.
Belarus and Israel introduced visa-free travel for their citizens starting November 26, 2015.
