Germany supports the idea about the admission of international inspectors to the Belarusian NPP construction site, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a joint news conference with visiting Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis in Berlin on 23 February, TUT.BY reports.
“We support the idea about international inspectors who would be able control the construction and get the appropriate plans and documents”, the German Chancellor said.
According to delfi.lt news portal, Lithuanian PM had expressed the idea to discuss Belarusian NPP with Angela Merkel before the meeting.
“This is not a problem of Lithuania and Belarus alone. Knowing how big the influence of Germany in the European Commission and the European Parliament is, Germany’s support is not only moral. And a clear signal that we must address the issues of economic and political relations between EU states and Belarus through the prism of Astravyets (Belarusian NPP – note)”, – Saulius Skvernelis stated.
Belarusian NPP is open to international inspectors, according to the Minister of Energy Vladimir Patupchyk. He made the statement in response to Angela Merkel’s words on 24 February, the media report.
“As for the statement of Angela Merkel about experts, we are not closing our doors”, the official is quoted as saying. “We are working with the European Union within the framework of preparation of our national report on the results of stress tests, which have already been held.”
Vladimir Potupchik added that stress test results will be presented to the public, including the European Commission.
