Meet probably the most adorable animal who lives in the Belarusian forests.
Small, fluffy and flying!
Belarusian ornithologist Denis Keatel managed to make a photo and video of a flying squirrel.
This is a rare animal for Belarus, which was nicknamed the most “cute creature” of our forests.
The experts of the “Achova Ptushak Batskaushchyny” organization found a flying squirrel during the expedition last year.
Before that the squirell hasn’t been seen on the territory of Belarus for more than 20 years.
This spring, Denis Kitel and his colleague decided to consolidate last year’s success and went to the forests on the north of the country.
Despite the storm that hindered the expedition, the search was successful.
“When there’s a will there’s a way. I found it. Under the small black alder on the edge of the boggy forest floodplain the land was simply strewn with squirrel “peas”.
At an altitude of about four meters there was a black hole in a tree trunk. Of course I checked if there are any owners of the house.
A light blow to the trunk – and I saw a flying squirrel climbing the trunk to the very top, to the thinnest branches,” Denis Kitel said.
The ornithologist climbed a spruce opposite it and recorded a short video.
During the expeditions of 2017 and 2018 about 50 inhabitation places of flying squirrels were found.
Now experts are working hard to protect the rare species that are in the Belarus Red Book.
Flying squirrels are not capable of flight in the same way as birds or bats.
They are able to glide from one tree to another with the aid of a parachute-like membrane that stretches from wrist to ankle.
Anatomically they are very similar to other squirrels but have a number of adaptations to suit their life style.
