Belarus, USA Discuss Military Cooperation

On September 20, 2016 during the visit to New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei held a number of bilateral meetings, MFA’s press service reports.

In particular, the official held talks with Michael Carpenter, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense.

The sides discussed the ways of establishing interaction between Belarus and the USA in the military sphere, as well as facilitating direct dialogue between the military agencies of the two countries in the situation of increasing tension in the Eastern European region.

Michael Carpenter visited Belarus in March 2016. On March 29 it was announced that Minsk and Washington were actively discussing the mutual accreditation of military attaches at the embassies.

As a result of the discussions, Colonel Michael C. VanDeVelde was appointed as Defense Attaché at the US Embassy in Belarus on concurrent. On August 8, the American official received accreditation from the Government of Belarus. while his Belarusian counterpart Lieutenant Colonel Andrei Mishuta was accredited as a non-resident Defense Attaché in Washington, D.C. the same month.
