Belarus sees its Olympic team off to Rio

The ceremony to see Team Belarus off to 31st Summer Olympic Games was held in Minsk on Tuesday, June 12. 16_olimpiycy_nok_20160704_bur_tutby_phsl

Belarusian sportsmen gathered at the National Olympic Committee HQ in the morning. Before that, they attended a meeting with president Alexander Lukashenko at the Palace of Independence.

The Team chose the captain and the flag bearer.

Alexander Bogdanovich, Canoeing champion, will head Belarus’ Rio 2016 team and Sergei Martynov, ex-shooter and currently a coach, will bear the national flag.

At the ceremony the athletes were given best wishes by sports officials.

“Tremendous work has been done and now it is the moment of truth. I wish you firmness and self-confidence, and the best results you can show”, the Minister of Sport and Tourism Alexander Shamko said.

At noon team members laid flowers at the Eternal Flame in Victory Square, which marked the end of the ceremony.


The opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games will be held at Maracana Stadium on 5 August. The Games will include 306 medal events.
