The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) has revealed the top 10 scientific accomplishments of 2017.
Top 10 include breakthroughs in science, biology, linguistics and history spheres.
1. Portable supercomputer
The United Informatics Institute of the NASB
The scientists conducted a fundamental research and developed a compact movable supercomputer.
The supercomuter is designed to process large amounts of data and hande high-precision modelling and design tasks.
2. Microelectronics protection
The materials science R&D center
A team of scholars developed and synthesised composite and nanostructural magnetic materials.
The materials offer excellent microwave qualities and can protect microelectronics from destabilizing external effects.
3. New methods for nuclear energy
The united energy and nuclear research institute Sosny
The specialists were praised for the development of methods and software for calculating optical cross-sections of atom nuclei with guaranteed precision.
Such methods are used to handle scientific and engineering tasks in nuclear energy industry.
4. Fight against tuberculosis
The Bioorganic Chemistry Institute
The experts will be awarded for finding out how Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria suppress the human immune system at a molecular level.
The knowledge will be used to create new-generation medications to cure tuberculosis.
5. Indicator of resistance to oxidative stress
The same institute has found a new universal indicator of the antioxidative potential for diagnosing the resilience of a person to oxidative stress.
6. Brain protection during stroke
Sergei Fedorovich, a senior researcher at the Biophysics and Cell Engineering Institute
The scientist is praised for finding out how oxygen deprivation interferes with synaptic transmission in neurons of animals.
Correcting such interference can protect the brain from damage in an ischemic stroke.
7. Protection of new-generation crops
The Microbiology Institute
The workers of the institution detected and inactivated the genes regulating the synthesis of antimicrobial metabolites in bacteria.
The knowledge will allow to increase the production of specific biologically active compounds and creating new-generation crop protection agents.
The Soil Science and Agrochemistry Institute
The scientitsts created a microbial compound, which combines effects of a bio fertilizer, a growth regulator, and a bio fungicide.
9. The 1st full Belarusian linguistic reference book
The Center for Belarusian Culture, Language, and Literature Studies and the United Informatics Institute
The experts have come up with ways to convert digital orthographic records of Belarusian words into phonetic transcriptions.
10. Unique Slavic settlements
The History Institute
The scolars discovered unique Slavonic settlements in southern Belarus.
Besides, they found out how the early Slavonic community emerged and evolved on Belarus’ territory.
The award ceremony will be held in late January 2018 to time Science Day in Belarus.
