On 16 July 2016 Belarus received a letter from the ICF saying that its executive board took a decision to impose a one-year suspension on Belarus’ Senior Men’s Canoe and Kayak National Team, including coaches, medical and support staff.
Thus, seven Belarusian athletes who won Olympic licenses will not be able to perform in Rio 2016. Belarus is going to appeal the ICF’s decision in Lausanne on Monday, 18 July, by submitting a package of documents to be reviewed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
According to Secretary General of the Belarusian NOC, slight chance that sportsmen might be let to take part in the Olympic Games, remains.
“Little time remains, but there’s chance that the team will be allowed to go. We believe that the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne will take our side. NOC will not be satisfied if we win the case after the Olympic Games in Rio”, the official said.
In order to support the Rowing Team, the Belarusian Olympic champions and medalists sent a letter to the President of the International Olympic Committee and the IOC Executive Committee, BelTA reports.
“Having no evidence-based facts, the ICF Executive Board imposed a one-year suspension on the Belarusian canoe and kayak athletes, who are among the world’s best, and thus denied them the right to compete in Rio”, the letter reads.
